Technology has moved a long way since the introduction of the 1N4007 type diode .
The newer IXYS ultra high speed soft recovery diodes with a reverse switching time of 40 NS are very smooth sounding indeed.
When bypassed with a small high voltage ceramic capacitor any potential high frequency artifacts are removed from the audible range.
The result is a very powerful and smooth power supply .
This device is capable of 12 amps rather than the typical tube rectifier between 120mA - 250mA used in most tube amplifiers.
Smoothing capacitors on the primary input can have 10x the capacity .
We have found this device in a full wave or bridge rectifier circuit to be slightly smoother sounding than a tube rectifier due in part to the much larger value capacitors and much lower impedance resulting in a deeper faster bass response .
Careful design has gone into the DC choke and capacitor choices allowing for a very long life power supply, based around our low noise USA made toroidal power transformer.
NOS tube rectifiers will get harder to find and very expensive in the future .
The tube rectifiers tend to exhibit a more euphonic sonic signature due to voltage drop across the plates and a certain amount of sag under heavy current demand when pushed hard by loud or dynamic music pieces .
For many years we have experienced this phenomenon believing this to be the correct timbre and tonal qualities needed .
As each listener desires a certain sound ,so we have included tube rectifiers in our production choices to maintain that option.

Nanocrystalline or Finemet® Nanocrystalline - The precursor of FINEMET® Nanocrystalline is amorphous ribbon (non-crystalline) obtained by rapid quenching at one million °C/second from the molten metal consisting of Fe, Si, B and small amounts of Cu and Nb. These crystallized alloys have grains which are extremely uniform and small, "about ten nanometers in size". Amorphous metals which contain certain alloy elements show superior soft magnetic properties through crystallization. It was commonly known that the characteristics of soft magnetic materials are "larger crystal grains yield better soft magnetic properties". Contrary to this common belief, soft magnetic material consisting of a small, "nano-order", crystal grains have excellent soft magnetic properties.

FINEMET® is Nanocrystalline soft magnetic metal which is special amorphous metal. It's phase characteristics is far better than conventional core material such as Ni and Co-based amorphous metal.

Three types of B-H curve squareness, high, middle and low remanence ratio, corresponding to various applications.

Nanocrystalline metals can be produced by rapid solidification from the liquid using a process such as melt spinning. This often produces an amorphous metal, which can be transformed into an nanocrystalline metal by annealing above the crystallization temperature. Wiki
As you can see Hitachi Metals Finemet ® are well out in front of all the other metals used in output transformers, up to 1/5 the core loss of Silicon Based Metals used in most production amplifiers today.
Amorphous is a close second.
